Single Ply

Single-ply roofing membranes are factory-manufactured membranes that are sheet-like. There are two types of single-ply membranes: thermoplastic or thermoset. Thermoplastic materials can be softened when heated and hardened when cooled.

Single-ply roofing membranes are produced using one of three manufacturing processes: calendering, extruding or spread coating.

Single-ply membranes can be installed fully adhered, mechanically attached or held down with ballast. Most single-ply roof systems do not receive surfacings.

Built Up

Built-up roofing consists of multiple layers of modified bitumen roofing and reinforcing membrane. It is the oldest and most common type of roof system. Built-up roofs, or BURs, are generally referred to as tar and gravel roofs.

BURs have three components: a waterproofing layer, a reinforcing layer and a surfacing layer, and can be installed using asphalt, coal tar, or cold-applied adhesive. Possible surfacings include aggregate, mineral surfaced or glass fiber cap sheets, hot asphalt, or elastomeric or aluminum coatings.

Service life varies from location, but can generally range from 15-25 years

Metal

There are two different categories of metal roofs: low-slope applications and steep-slope applications.

There is only one type of metal roof system used in low-slope applications — structural metal panels. Structural metal panel roof systems can be used for low slope roofs because of their water barrier characteristics. Structural metal panel roof systems can also be used for steep slope roof assemblies.

Most structural metal panel roof systems are designed to resist the passage of water at the joints. However, condensation should be expected to develop on the undersides of metal roof panels. Careful consideration should be paid to vapor retarder, insulation and ventilation issues.

Structural metal panel roof systems are installed over a large variety of substrates.

Shingles

Asphalt shingles are one of the most common types of roof systems for steep-slope roofs.

They come in two types: fiber glass and organic. Organic consists of paper saturated with asphalt to make it waterproof with a top coat of adhesive with embedded ceramic granules. Organic shingles weigh more so they have better blow-off resistance. Fiberglass shingles have a glass fiber mat coated with asphalt that contains mineral fillers. It also contains a top coat of adhesive with embedded granules.

Modified Bitumen

Modified Bitumen roofing is one of the most popular types of roofing systems. It can be installed with one or multiple layers, depending on the roof’s substrate. There are two types of modified roof systems: SBS (Styrene Butadiene Styrene) and APP (Atactic Polypropylene). SBS membranes can be mopped in hot asphalt, torch applied, or cold-process applied. APP membranes are torch applied, which requires less room and equipment than a mopped SBS system.

Tile

Tile roofs are considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing types of roofs. Tile comes in a variety of colors and textures and styles range from flat to barrel-style tile.

There are generally two types of tile: clay and concrete. Each type comes in different styles and colors.

Tile is virtually resistant to the elements, which makes it an ideal roof system. It is practically maintenance free and is also considered an energy efficient type of roof system. Tile is Class A fire resistant, and can withstand winds up to 125-miles per hour.
