Advanced Roofing Awarded for Best Roof in Broward

Advanced Roofing Awarded for Best Roof in Broward County School District

Advanced Roofing, for the second consecutive time, has been awarded by the School Board of Broward County “Best Project Overall” for installing quality workmanship in the past 6 months.  In 2008, the School Board designed a program in which they honor one roofing contractor semi-annually for an “Award of Excellence in Roofing”. The criteria are determined based upon Outstanding Craftsmanship in Membranes, Sheet Metal, and Best Overall Project.  Advanced has won this Award two of the three times it has been given.  The School Board Building Department coordinates an award ceremony at the school with the outstanding roof, in which they invite the contractor to be recognized by the Principal, the Project Manager, the Director of Planning and Design, the Building Official and the Roofing Inspector.

Shelly Meloni (SBBC Director of Planning and Design), Divine Amoah (SBBC Architect), Meghan Gallagher (SBBC Project Manager), M.L. Rouco (SBBC Inspector/ Plan Reviewer), Greg Madera (ARI Foreman), Raquel Cobb (Quest Center Principal), David Butts (Quest Center Head Custodian), David Baytosh (ARI Construction Manager), Paul Royds (ARI Sheet Metal Division Manger, representing Lucio Godinez not pictured), Juan Guerrero (ARI Roofing Mechanic), Rob Kornahrens (ARI President)

The project that Advanced was awarded for this term was The Quest Center located in Hollywood.  This school that Advanced Roofing re-roofed from January – May of 2009 is geared for students with autism and/or intellectual disabilities.
Advanced Roofing President, Rob Kornahrens, attended this ceremony to join the School Board Staff in recognizing Advanced’s Foreman, Greg Madera, and his Lead Man, Juan Guerrero, for their outstanding craftsmanship in membrane installation.

Sheet Metal Division Foreman, Lucio Godinez, was recognized for his outstanding craftsmanship in sheet metal installation.

David Baytosh, Construction Manager, was awarded for his supervision, coordination, safety and quality control of the project making it the “Best Overall Project”.  David was praised by Principal Cobb for his constant communication and updates he provided her and her staff.  This was incredibly crucial on this job, due to the sensitivity of the special needs students.  The crew always made sure that the safety of the children was the top priority.  They did all demolition at night so the noise and debris would not affect the children’s daily activities.  Ms. Cobb also commented on the quickness of the project; Advanced completed the project well ahead of schedule.  She stated it was the easiest project she had ever been involved with and the best contractor she had worked with. The entire crew was praised for the job they had done, since it is not just the awarded personnel who make the job a success, but the entire project team.  The School Board Inspector, M.L. Rouco, also recognized David for his exceptional dedication; she discussed how he does additional things beyond his scope of work to make sure the School District is getting the best quality roofs.

Greg and his crew removed 81,200 square feet of existing Built Up Roofing and installed a new Firestone two ply modified bitumen roof.  Along with the roof replacement, they also replaced the existing abandoned skylights with new Miami-Dade approved, hurricane rated skylights.  Typically, Advanced would remove these abandoned skylights for the School Board and infill them with new decking and roofing.  In this instance, since many of the students are unable to go outside, the principal requested they stay in place to provide natural lighting.  So, Advanced revised the scope and found a product that would be appropriate and safe in the south Florida High Velocity Hurricane Zone.  Lucio and his crew installed all new 22 gauge stainless steel sheet metal details, which included custom fabricated expansion joint metal, coping cap, goose necks, etc. In addition, he custom designed downspouts that would re-route the water from the gutters into flowerbeds, instead of the sidewalks they were previously draining on. These new downspouts helped alleviate deep water that would accumulate in the walk ways and could be a slip hazard for the children.

Congratulations to the whole Advanced Roofing Team for winning this award and a job well done.
