Thanksgiving treat: turkeys cooked in tar

You won't find Herbert Allen's method of cooking turkey in any of Julia Child's cookbooks.

And if you decide to adopt his unorthodox style in time for next week's Thanksgiving feast, you'll probably hit the roof by the required investment in a 450-gallon tar kettle and just as much roofing tar.

Allen, a veteran South Florida roofer with Fort Lauderdale-based Advanced Roofing, was the star chef at his company's holiday feast on Thursday after dumping six turkeys into a boiling vat of tar. This tar and no-feathers style is a roofing tradition that dates to the 1880s when the industry got started, he said.
